War in UkraineIn a UN address, Zelensky denounces Russian "terror."
Following a new missile barrage that caused power outages throughout Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelensky has accused Russia of "crimes against humanity."
By videolink, he stated to the UN Security Council that the Russian "formula of terror" had caused "millions of people to stay without energy supplies, without heating, and without water" in subzero temperatures.
Ukraine claimed that the strikes resulted in at least seven deaths.
The nuclear power plants were shut down.
The three plants that are still under Ukrainian control were cut off from the grid, and the largest plant in Europe, Zaporizhzhia, had to use diesel generators once more to power its cooling systems and important safety equipment.
The Zaporizhzhia plant, which is owned and operated by Russia, has been damaged by repeated shelling, and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has expressed great concern about it.
Although it was not directly affected, Moldova, a neighbor, also experienced massive blackouts on Wednesday.
Moscow has intensified its attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure as winter approaches.
More than half of the country's electricity grid needs to be fixed, according to officials, as a result of Russia's missile strikes on power plants, which they claim have caused "colossal" damage.
Mr. Zelensky stated late on Wednesday that efforts to restore electricity would continue throughout the night and that the situation in Kyiv remained "very difficult."
According to Mayor Vitali Klitschko, at least 80% of the people living in the capital lacked access to electricity or running water.
However, Mr. Zelensky stated that Lviv, Odesa, and Cherkasy, among other cities hit by Russian missiles, had successfully restored power.
"Reckless and cruel"
Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the US ambassador to the UN, stated that Russian President Vladimir Putin was "weaponizing winter" to inflict enormous suffering.
She stated, "Moscow is now adopting a cowardly and inhumane strategy that punishes Ukrainian men, women, and children" after fighting on the battlefield.
Emergency services reported that a missile struck a maternity unit in the southern region of Zaporizhzhia, killing a newborn baby.
According to the commander of Ukraine's armed forces, General Valeriy Zaluzhniy, 67 cruise missiles were fired by Moscow, and 51 of them were successfully stopped by air defenses.
The Ukrainian military reported that Russia had once again deployed attack drones.
